The history of white wine goes back thousands of years - it has been found that the Egyptians enjoyed white wine as early as 1500 BC. The Greeks and Romans continued this tradition, and white wine remained popular throughout Europe for centuries, even enjoying more prestige than red wine for a long time. Even today, white wine is recognized worldwide for its refreshing and versatile character and is produced wherever there is a favourable climate for viticulture - from traditional wineries in Europe to somewhat newer vineyards in New Zealand and California.

White wines tantalise the palate with a delightful range of flavours. Common notes include citrus fruits like lemon and grapefruit, alongside hints of stone fruits like peach and apricot. Depending on the grape varietal and winemaking techniques, you might also encounter floral aromas, a touch of minerality, or even honeyed sweetness.  For instance, a Sauvignon Blanc is known for its bright acidity and grassy notes, while a Chardonnay can range from light and unoaked with flavours of apple and pear, to rich and buttery after spending time in oak barrels.

The freshness and versatility of white wine makes it a great companion for different dishes. Light white wines are perfect with seafood, salads and delicate pastas. Fuller white wines are ideal with white meat, poultry and creamy pastas. Some common combinations are:

  • Sauvignon Blanc: seafood, salads, goat cheese;
  • Chardonnay: chicken, fish, creamy pasta;
  • Riesling: Asian cuisine, spicy dishes;
  • Pinot Grigio: grilled fish, vegetables

From summer picnics to festive dinners, Prike's wine experts can help you find the perfect white wine.
